Main focus of the Indira Gandhi Medical College & Hospital is to provide high quality patient care services and quality medical education. The hospitals attached to IGMC have total bed strength of 872. Expansion plans are going on despite the constraint of land in hilly terrain of Shimla. OPD including super specialities in IGMC are fully operational and now the patients has better sitting place in sanitized environment.

The Kamla Nehru Hospital has now been named as State Hospital for women and Children providing facilities in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Neonatology. New indoor block in main complex has been completed and a separate examination hall has also been provided. The hostel facility has been provided and rooms have been alloted to students at Blessington and more blocks are to be added in very near future.

The college have the facilities of "Open Heart Surgery" for the benefit the poor patients requiring this facility, thus saving money and time.

The state of the art MRI facility is also available.

This college is also imparting training to Nurses, Radiographers, O.T. Asst., Para Medical Ophthalmic Assistants and Laboratory Technicians. Indira Gandhi Medical college is one of the few colleges in India to have fiber optic endoscopy and C.T. Scan equipment.Closed heart surgery including pace maker (insertion is also available).
